MSG and obesity

As you know, obesity is an increasing problem that is affecting a large portion of the adult population and, alarmingly, an increasing number of children. One of the most powerful substances that leads to this obesity is the flavour enhancer MSG. MSG is found in most prepared foods, frozen foods, soy products and more.

noodlesMSG (Monosodium Glutamate) is now the most widely used flavour enhancer in the world. MSG and MSG-containing substances are commonly used in processed food, fast foods and in nearly all canned and frozen foods.

MSG directly stimulates the pancreas to release insulin making you more hungry (and sooner) than you would have been. Over-release of insulin can lead to obesity and insulin resistance - the start of Type II Diabetes. Obesity, and Type II diabetes are now increasing, even in children. Before the introduction of MSG into the British diet, these diseases were rare in children.

As well as having an uncontrollable urge to eat, people who eat foods containing MSG often complain of low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). This is no surprise, as there are glutamate receptors in the pancreas. Because MSG stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, it results in low blood sugar and feelings of hunger. In fact, scientists deliberately feed MSG to laboratory animals to make them obese.

MSG hidden in foods

Eliminating MSG from your diet is very difficult. Labels can be misleading. A label that says, “No MSG added”, doesn't necessarily mean that the food is free of MSG, it simply means that the manufacturer didn't put in additional MSG. It may, in fact, already have been part of another ingredient, for instance, “hydrolyzed vegetable protein”, an additive commonly used to increase the protein content of a wide variety of foods. Manufacturers also hide MSG as part of “natural flavourings” because it is a natural product.
